Adenomyosis

Adenomyosis Overview:

Adenomyosis is very similar in aetiology to endometriosis, only instead of endometrial tissue growing outside the uterine cavity, it begins to form inside the msucle wall of the uterus itself.

Aetiology:

Theories:

  1. Result of surgery
  2. Endometiral tissue was implanted in the uterine muscle before birth (as a foetus)
  3. Inflammation post-childbirth causes endometrial tissue to enter the weakened muscle layer

Due to the symptoms reliance on oestrogen cycles, the condition almost always diasappears after menopause (as is with endometriosis).
