Diabetic Nephropathy Overview:
Diabetic nephropathy is responsible for an estimated 20-40% of all chronic kidney disease cases. It is the most common cause of end-stage renal failure (ESRF)in developed countries.
Aetiology:
- Normally progresses to CKD
- Slow and insidious
- Glycation of basement membrane
- obstruction to blood flow
- increased pressure causes arterial dilation
- increase in glomerular filtration rate
- 1st stage: hyperfiltration
- This progresses into stage 2 over time.
