Diabetic Nephropathy Overview:

Diabetic nephropathy is responsible for an estimated 20-40% of all chronic kidney disease cases. It is the most common cause of end-stage renal failure (ESRF)in developed countries.

Aetiology:

  • Normally progresses to CKD
  • Slow and insidious
  1. Glycation of basement membrane
  2. obstruction to blood flow
  3. increased pressure causes arterial dilation
  4. increase in glomerular filtration rate
  5. 1st stage: hyperfiltration
  6. This progresses into stage 2 over time.
