Lymphoma

Lymphoma Overview:

Lymphoma is cancer of the lymph cells. This usually includes either the B-lymphocytes or the T-lymphocytes. B-cell lymphomas are much more common than T-cell lymphomas, most likely due to the high level of genetic differentiation a B-cell takes in its life.

Although there are about 80 different types of lymphomas, there are two main types: Hodgkins lymphoma or non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

Hodgkins Lymphoma

  • Characterised by the presence of Reed Sternberg cells.
  • Slow growing
  • Ocurrs in younger people
  • Remains fairly local and travels from lymph node to lymph node.
  • Generally non fatal.
  • Systemic effects are not common.

Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma

  • One of the most common cancers.

Aetiology:

  • Translocation of chromosomes
    • translocation of Bcl-2 and Bc-l6 is a common cause
  • Mutation of genes

Special Considerations:

Although there are plenty of botanical medicines that have shown effectiveness in treating cancers, it is not wise to rely on them as the only treatment for the condition. With cancers, especially aggressive cancer cell lines, treatment should involve radio or chemotherapy. Botanical medicines, adequate nutrition, and lifestyle changes are very important, but should not be solely relied upon.
