Helicobacter pylori Infection

Overview:

Helicobacter pylori bacteria is one of the most common infectious bacterial species in the world. This gram negative, mobile bacteria has the ability to secrete urease to neutralise an acidic environment, which allows it to live in the stomach.

Aetiology:

In the stomach, H. pylori secretes urease to neutralise the acidic pH. It then travels through th acid and enters the columnar epithelial cells of the stomach. Once there, it adheres to the stomach lining using a special polysaccharide.
